Fred realized his mistake too late. Yet what was done was done. If there
was anything he had learned from his father it was to look at life and
take it like a man. If he was stuck in this gods-forsaken cave system he
would make the most of it. He walked up a flight of rough-hewn stairs at
the back of the room and exited onto a higher platform. If Fred had to
live here the rest of his days, he would live in the higher regions, not
the lower.
Within days he was able to make basic field-quarters within a not-too- large room that was not far from the Dragon's old quarters. It wasn't the roomiest place, but it had only two entrances and both were defensable. His studies of dragons and of the southern dragon in particular had taught him how the beasts hated living near any other of their kind, but had a perverse pleasure in gathering about themselves followers of diverse kinds. What little Fred had learned about the Southern Caves was that within was a maze filled with teaming creatures. All ruled by the Dragon. Now the Dragon was dead, by Fred. Logic was that he was the big kahuna now. But, of course, Fred had to make sure that the other denizens of this nasty place knew of such impeccable logic. He killed the Dragon, he would kill a few more creatures just to set the record straight. Fred smiled. He was rich, famous, gorgeous, and pretty soon he'd be running his own empire!
