Following the Pipe
The Never Ending Quest - Episode 2027

Astra ruefully brushed one of the larger lumps from her shoulder. The
stuff might
not be a health hazard any more, and it might not smell all that much, but
it was still
horrid. Since their clothes were sodden and filthy, Astra and Ardua
reluctantly
stripped off and threw the revolting garments over the side of the
platform. "Just
my luck, when I finally found something to wear," thought Astra. Beneath
their clothes,
they were not exactly clean - just less filthy than they still were from
the neck up.
Then Astra noticed a large outflow pipe some six feet in diameter almost on a level with the platform, and some ten feet away from the platform edge. "I reckon I could jump to that," she said, "and anyway if I fall short then I can't get much dirtier than I am already. If I make it, I'll see where the pipe leads and try to get help. Give me a couple of hours, and if I don't come back you'll have to jump for it too." Astra took a running jump, and just managed to land in the pipe. Fortunately only a trickle of effluent was coming out of it. She turned and waved to her friends, then headed up the pipe. The pipe headed straight for a hundred yards or so, sloping gently upwards the while. Then it curved gently to the left. Astra noticed that much smaller pipes were beginning to branch off from the main one. She assumed that each one led to an individual dwelling. They were far too small for her to follow, though, so she continue up the main pipe. Eventually:
