Fred was sure that the plain of sulphur hadn't been there before. After
all, he had searched the whole of Hell thoroughly, from top to bottom, and
he could hardly have overlooked a great expanse such as that. But he
supposed that he had to accept that even the geography might not remain
constant here. "You are dismissed," he told the demon. He turned his back
on it to walk towards the plain, thus failing to see it stick its tongue
out at him.
The plain stretched as far as the eye could see. As Fred set foot on it, the pale yellow sulphur crystals crunched beneath his boots. Here and there, areas of the plain burnt with a blue flame. He avoided these regions, but he could not avoid the acrid smoke that drifted across his path from time to time. Far in the distance, he thought he could intermittently glimpse something through the fumes, something that wasn't sulphur-coloured. Or rather a number of somethings, though at this range they appeared as no more than dark specks. Were they perhaps people and/or demons? Could this be where the missing inhabitants of Hell were to be found?
