The sleep spell that had been cast on Tarsa an hour or two earlier was now
wearing off. It had been cast for two reasons: to prevent her struggling
and
also so that she would not know where she had been taken.
Tarsa drowsily opened her eyes, but what she saw shocked her fully awake. Instead of the expected familiar bedroom she saw a large cave only dimly illuminated by the torches attached to the walls. Memory flooded back to her: of waking to find a black-cloaked figure bending over her, of giving one startled cry of alarm, and then the intruder gesturing and everything going dark. That gesture had completed a spell of sleep, she guessed. Somehow the magic user responsible had managed to penetrate all the security surrounding her and then - which was even more of a mystery - managed to get her out of the temple complex and to wherever she now was. She might not know where she was, but she was sure that she knew whose captive she was: the followers of Valmar, often referred to as the Legion of Darkness. The one consolation that she had was that they had abducted her rather than killing her. Since the latter would have been a simpler and more certain method of preventing her performing the ceremony, she wondered why she was still alive. What did they want with her? In case there was some advantage to be had from her captors not realising that she was now awake, she remained quiet and moved only her head as she took in her surroundings. She was lying on the hard rock floor of the cave, shackled to the wall by a chain about eight feet in length fastened to a cuff around one of her ankles. The cave floor seemed to be roughly circular in shape and about forty yards across. There was only one obvious exit, a tunnel on the far side of the cave from her own location. The ceiling seemed to be about ten feet high where she was, increasing to about thirty feet in the middle of the cave. The smoke from the torches rose to a point in the centre of the ceiling, where it disappeared. There must be an outlet there, preventing the cave from becoming unpleasantly smoky.
