Varney's head jerked back, the arrow had embedded itself deep inside his
brain. Andrea yelped with victory. But then her face paled and the
crossbow trembled in her shaking hands. Varney did not fall but stood
there looking down on her with pure evil in his eyes. He reached up to the
arrow and broke its shaft. He threw the feathered stick to the ground and
reached for the back of his skull to pull out the pointed end. Andrea
stared at this with a horrified calm. She could not believe that the
creature was not dead. She could not believe that she was about to die.
Varney pulled the arrow's head out of his skull and then showed it to the
cowering girl, caked with black blood in the palm of his hand. "You cannot
kill what is already dead," he whispered to her. She whimpered and pushed
herself away from the nightmare, but her back was up against the wall and
there was nowhere to run.
Suddenly a loud metal crash exploded from the other side of the warehouse. Varney turned to the sound, knowing that it was one of the grates falling to the floor. Someone else was coming. But who? With a hiss he threw the arrowhead away and bent all his will upon the stricken girl. "You are mine, little one. Remain hidden here until I return for you." Andrea nodded mutely, his supernatural will overcoming her shocked and addled wits. Then Varney moved beyond the boxes and went in search of the unknown intruders.
