Fred suddenly became aware of something slithering about in his breeches
in a very sensitive
area. The shock was so great that he could not suppress a shriek. As a
startled
and alarmed Astra watched, he reached into his clothing, hoping that
whatever was in
there wouldn't bite off his fingers - or something even more vital. He
pulled out...
a small harmless frog. He tossed it back into the water, a disgusted
expression on his face.
Astra and Seu'el both burst out laughing. Fred scowled at them, but then he saw the funny side himself and grinned. "There's some advantage in being effectively naked, then," Astra said to him. "At least what happened to you couldn't have happened to me." Seu'el listened uncomprehending as the woman said more words in her strange tongue. Six months ago he would not have stared at her as he was doing now, but he had just reached an age to take a keen interest. A secondary factor was her red hair; he had never seen anyone with hair like that before. Either the woman did not notice his gaze or was not bothered by it, for she showed no sign of embarrassment. Why was she wearing fetters on her wrists, though? Surely she must be an escaped prisoner, and the man must be aiding her. That could explain why they had been travelling through the desert so woefully ill-equipped.
