Fred was confused. He had come to the Shreken to slay the Dragon. He had
found the small puppy dog who called itself Velus...or was that Velius?
Fred was confused.
That puppy dog had led him through the maze of tunnels only to exit them altogether! He was led to a hut by a forest. The puppy dog had entered the hut, telling Fred to make sure no one else came in. Shortly thereafter the puppy dog came out and with him was the King! Fred was confused. The King gave Fred a new mission, to find the Stone of Isis, an emerald gem crafted into the form of a beetle. Fred was told this would help the King and aid the Kingdom. Fred was also told that the King would take care of Velius... or was that Velus? Fred was confused. Yet it was the King, his Leige, his Lord who gave him this task. Fred would obey, and so he went forth into that forest, even though he was not sure of exactly what to do or how to do it. The only words of help from the king was the description and the fact that the stone was last seen in the hands of Dirk D'Aring the fifth son of Maluk Krull - the knight from Cogan who left the path of swords to enter into the way of wizards. Fred knew that Cogan was to the northeast, he would have to leave the Shreken, cross the Seaward Road, and enter into foreign lands. Perhaps he should resupply in the towns of the Duke Barnabas? But then these thoughts were broken by the laughter of a small man... child... thing. A gnome. Not only that, the gnome told him that the King was an evil wizard! And that he should kill the King with a jeweled knife! Fred was confused. Fred would not do such a thing without proof. But the gnome only came back with a ring. Fred was confused. Not only that, while he was waiting for the one foot creature, he was met by a woman and her daughter. The woman spoke madness yet it rang with a truth all its own, and then they both entered into a nearby hut. Fred was confused. Now here he stands, with a pretty pinky ring, and an empty feeling in his gut. He turned to leave that place and resume his journey. But then the emptiness within him caused a sudden sharp pain. He wondered if the women might have a bite to eat... He entered the hut. The old woman was nowhere to be seen. The younger one was sitting at a table sipping at some soup. "Hello," she said. Fred could hear her heart beating even louder than before. The sound mesmerized him, attracted him, seduced him. Fred was confused. "What are you staring at?" said the girl. Fred glided over to the girl and grasped her shoulders. He felt his control slipping, the rhythm of the beats was joined by the sound of a stream... a flow of liquid not water... Fred was confused. "Ouch, you're hurting me!" she said. Fred could smell something... something luscious, somethig wondrous... life itself! Life was flowing like a river... the river was the blood within this woman's very body! Fred wanted it, he needed it, he would have it. "AAIIIGH!" screamed the girl. Fred wasn't confused any longer.
