Astra had gone through a lot of trouble making her way into the Northern
Caves, she had prepared exhaustively to kill the Wyrm. But her capture
at its hands had so deflated her ego that in the time of her imprisonment
and humiliation at the hands of the Dragon, she came to contemplate all
the horrible things in her life. Though there were many, the one that
stuck out was her ex-boyfriend, Sir Toby.
Sir Toby was actually no "Sir" at all - he had been a manservant to a high-ranking matriarch within the westlands of Aqualaria. His name was Tobias and he had made the status of freedman by effort and intellect and perseverance. Astra had met him on one of her forays into the badlands of MalBoncton. She had taken him to her bed during her fortnight of raids, pillages, and general amazonian fun in the "land of men." He had made a good lover, creative. But when it was time for the princess to return to the jungle hinterlands, when she had ordered Tobias to return with her, to be her servant and lover by the coast, he refused. He refused. That was not acceptable. She was a Princess and he... he was just a man. He ran away that very night, after thieving some gold, silver, copper, and a bag of clothing. Astra had not forgotten, indeed since that time she had had some trackers in the field nonchalantly make inqueries into his whereabouts, which is why she knew that as of a month ago he had been sighted in this Aqualarian bordertown on the edge of the Goth Mountains. But she was now more worried about the leering men who had congregated about her. Well, not exactly worried - she could kill them all if need be, but she didn't really want to at the moment. She was concerned, for their safety, she was -after all- their princess. The fight broke out between two of the horribly drunk men. It soon enveloped all the drunks, Fred, poor Velus dog, and -of course- Astra. Chairs, tables, bottles were all thrown into the fray; man-wenches, inn- maids, and washers jumped in; yelling, screaming and crying was heard all round. In the midst of all this no one noticed a strange glow fill the room, nor the appearance of a new person who wholeheartedly entered the fracas. By the time it was over Fred was exhausted, Velus was pooped and Astra was no where to be found. No one really remembered what started the fight, but the Pub owner, Miss Sri Elen, had shoved most of the drunks out. They were freedmen (mostly) and some women (furriers and mining girls - riffraff from an Aqualarian point of view). Fred looked under every table that was still standing but could not find Astra. He looked behind every ale barrel but did not find her. Then he heard a cry upstairs. He ran up in time to see a woman in green gawking at a naked corpse - it was Astra. She was dead (as the word 'corpse' implied). A broken table leg was shoved through her torso and a pool of blood had formed where she lay. Fred was stunned. He was in lands somewhat controlled by the Aqualarian matriarchy, lands near the Goth; he had left his quest in the Shreken - a quest given him by his LiegeKing; and now he didn't even have his sword!
