Betrayed!

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 19321

They went inside the cave, but Fred felt uneasy. Something was wrong. How could Carola know that this cave was not connected to the Dragon's caves, given that the four of them had no idea where they were? What did she mean by "not connected", anyway? They hadn't been above ground the whole time. And how could Carola tell whether it was night or day outside, since they had no way of keeping track of time?

Fred was about to suggest that they retrace their steps, when there was a rumbling sound from behind them. Turning round, they saw a metal shutter was descending, blocking off the exit. "Uh-oh!" Astra said. "I don't like the look of this."

Then, the shadows at the far end of the cave were suddenly illuminated by a bright light, and they were able to see that the Dragon stood there facing them. "Well done," he said to Belinda and Carola. "You have exposed Astra's treachery."

"Can trying to rescue one's sisters be counted as treachery?" Astra said bitterly. "If so, it surely pales into nothing compared to Belinda and Carola's own betrayal of me." She turned to look at her sisters. "Why?" she asked them.

It was the Dragon who answered her. "I guessed that you would try to rescue them - though I didn't anticipate that you would have the help of the noble Fred - so I made preparations...

  1. "I told your sisters that they would be freed if they delivered you to me."
  2. "These aren't your sisters. I moved them to a safe place and replaced them with dopplegangers."
  3. Before he could say any more, Fred pulled out the charm which the old man had given him, hoping against hope that it would have some effect on the Dragon.

JH (Welcome, Dark Stime! Hope you don't think I was unduly picky, but there's nothing in the story to indicate that they'd ever left the cave system)
