Stacy sighed. "Thanks, Chris," she said, without any trace of sincerity.
"Now go and find something else to do, will you?" She couldn't imagine how
on Earth she'd ever been stupid enough to get engaged to someone this
annoying. If that part of what he'd told her were even true. Instead, Chris sat down across from them. "I'll be quiet," he said. Stacy glared at him, but he just looked at her with a far too innocent expression. "Fine," said Stacy. "Whatever." She set her tea down on the coffee table, untouched. At the moment, she wasn't interested in beverages. Ted, on the other hand, appeared to really want something to do with his hands, and he sipped his nervously, twisting the mug back and forth between swallows. "All right," said Stacy. "Let me see if I have this straight. Uh, I mean, if I have it correct." Ted laughed faintly, but Chris just scowled. "I caught you two..." "We were only kissing," said Ted quickly. "It was nothing serious. It was the first time, honest. I meant it when I said I wouldn't dream of taking Chris away from you. I like you, Stacy. You're a great person to work with, and I didn't intend to hurt you. It's just that, well... He approached me, and I got a little carried away, and..." Ted sank into a miserable silence. "And?" prompted Stacy finally. "And there's no excuse. I'm sorry." Unwilling to meet her eyes, Ted ducked his head and gulped at his tea. "All right." Stacy felt inclined to believe him. Which left some interesting questions about Chris' role in the whole affair. Er, event. "Well?" she said, turning to Chris. "You want to tell your side of the story now?" "Aren't you going to drink your tea?" asked Chris. Stacy felt a strong urge to tear her hair out. Or possibly Chris'.
