Beatrice was sick of being just a coal-miner's daughter. She wanted to be
something. With the strangers coming in and telling tales of heroic deeds,
she felt her desire turn to something else: resolve. That lecherous Elder
Benchley set her father out with the good news; that, she decided, was
going to be her opportunity. Then everything turned wrong: the
disapearances, the magic-man, the Black Hand. She was just a little scared
girl after all, just a nothing. But then Crutch came by and said he loved
her! And he gave her a most wonderful, beautiful necklace to prove his
love. And then he said he wanted to take her away from all this! And so
here she was, here he was, here they were - riding on an ass south towards
Califie. They were going to start a new life. Even as Beatrice thought
these thoughts she lifted the necklace from her bosom and marveled at how
it shimmered, a strange glow to be sure, but pretty in a wondrous way. They had left the Tumbar road a few hours past and were now taking a winding road which lead through the foothills of the mountains. They were now in the lands of the Califs. The air seemed so much warmer and cheerier here, everything seemed to be going their way. The birds sang in the trees above and far away she heard the bells of a church ringing loud and clean through the hills. They went round a corner in the road and were forced to halt suddenly. In front of them stood a little girl with a stern look on her face. Crutch chuckled. "You best move off the road little one! It is not safe to stand in the middle of the road! Do you need a ride somewhere?"The girl flung out her right arm and as she did so a black snake seemed to materialize out of nowhere. The snake shot at Crutch with lightning speed and bit him in the neck. He let out an agonizing cry and fell to the ground, convulsing and writhing around on the dirt. The girl giggled and then turned her attention to Beatrice, who was completely frozen in shock. The little girl made the same motion with her right hand and another snake materialized and went flying towards the terrified Beatrice. The fangs of the snake felt like iorn needles full of fire being embedded into her neck. She cried out in her terror. She felt the snake's deadly venom spreading through her pain-racked body. She fell to the ground and began to convulse. The amulet fell from her hand and landed next to her on the ground. The little girl calmly walked over and picked the amulet up, admiring it with childlike wonder. She then turned and walked away, leaving the two young lovers to die in agony.
