Fred and Mayderry exchanged glances when they heard that the King was
coming to Absollom. Being that he was accompanied by the Troupes Divina
and was only a half-hour away, Fred had little time to think. The Duchy
was well in his control (relatively speaking), what with the peasants who
had risen up and the Trescent Knights and soldiers who had defected, yet
he knew that he was in no position to stand against the LeigeKing. Any
move in that direction would mean immediate death.
"Mayderry," said Fred in a whisper. "You and I are the only ones here who know of Crown Pince Cedrik. Hopefully Velus had a better time of tracking him down than we. Whatever happened when our good Cedrik disappeared, good Leige Emry had his hands in it. If Emry knows of his brother's return, he surely knows that I know... but you are a stranger to him. You are my servant, that is all he needs to know, and as for me, I must be very careful..." Meanwhile the Duke of Suffex had just had an interesting conversation with the keeper of the Boar's Head. "So where is my son now?" Lord Hasilfur replied: "We know only what these miners tell us. He came to Mudspot, he claimed to have killed the Dragon by cutting off its head." That was what the one called Crowley had said. Then they saw the headless Dragon, not dead at all. They persued the thing and fought with it at Penn. "We didn't do much good against it, did we?" "And so how did my son claim to kill it with apparent ease?" "Maybe he found it sleeping?" After the battle of Penn Duke Drederigo and what was left of the King's Guard with whom he was riding continued to Mudspot. The Duke soon found that the place was less than a dot on a furrier's map. They came and heard new tales, of Fred and his companions and their disapearances, of a mad mage and Allarian soldiers who came to arrest Fred in the name of the King. They heard about the heroic Black Hand -sound more like scoundrels, said Lord Hasilfur under his breath - and the dealings of the House Mollari. "Mollari," spat Duke Drederigo. "These days have been madness, with the Dragon and the destruction. I hated leaving the refugees of Penn, at least I know Duke Ospel will do all he can for his people and they shall find some hovels to lay their heads in within the nearer villages. My task was to find my son, our Leige commands we find him, help him, or bring him back to Caemlyn. Now I hear that he was arrested by our King! I feel we are on a goose-chase." "Yet if the miners are correct, we must go back to Caemlyn and speak with our King regarding your son and this Dragon. But I still can't figure why would our Leige arrest your son? And how did know where to send his other Guard to this god-forsaken place?" "That is a good question," agreed the Duke. "One of many."
