So...the question of the day is...what happened to Velus? Was he turned
into a gnome? Is he still a doggy? A human? A bacon and cheese sandwhich?

Velus is a gnome, working closely with Fred and Astra.

Velus is still a dog. He's helping the animals of the kingdom fight the dragon. For example, Josie the racing horse and her two brothers recently kicked over a half-built building that the dragon hoped to store weapons in.

Velus is a human and a slave in the dragon's castle.

Velus is a bacon and cheese sandwhich, kept warm by spells in the kitchen larder.

Velus had mysteriously found himself in the realm of the Elves. They had listened to his story and were preparing to confront the dragon's forces. (Not to fight, but to learn before possibly fighting).
