The Dragon Screws Up

It's been a week since the dragon had changed them to mystical creatures.
Fred and Astra would have been slaves in the castle if not for one
important mistake. An urban legend. Many were the unconfirmed stories about various dangers in the kingdom. Such as the hook handed maniac that ended up leaving his hook on the carriage door of a doting teenage couple. Or the kidnapped waif that was found at the fair exit with different colored hair, different sandals and under the influence of a gaes. Few of these stories could be disproven or proven. One of the more popular urban legends concerns gnomes. Many thought of them as small, warty disgusting creatures, only good for gardening and gaurding and fighting in illegal gnome fights. (No one could name where the fights took place, it was always a friend of a friend who saw them). That's what the dragon wanted to turn Fred and Astra into. But his mental pictures were nowhere near the reality of what they ended up as. Yes, gnomes were short and yes they had gardening skills. But they were an offshoot of elves and halflings. They could walk from tree limb to tree limb as one would cross the street. Like elves, their prowress with bows and arrows were unmatched. Even their general presence made people feel healthier and stronger. This served to get them out of the castle in about, oh, ten minutes after the transformation. Real gnomes lived far to the north. And this was the Dragon's second mistake. Creating two of them out of the yelm of magic surrounding the earth was as unto an alarm bell. Now the lands of the kingdom were overun with scouts. And parties of rebellion led by Fred, Astra and many other commanders. (No one knew everyone that was in the rebellion so in case of capture and torture the whole thing wouldn't collapse). All this combined to create chaos and confusion for days on end. The Dragon's forces suffered defeats and wedgies and material theft and disparagement in the press...battles were kept to a minimum while humiliation and torment were the orders of the day.
