The Never Ending Quest - Episode 18009

Betty stuck the jelly baby into her mouth and began chewing mechanically. She scarcely even tasted the thing, as all her attention was focused on the rather difficult process of trying to wrap her brain around what was happening. The weird thing is, this was very nearly the stuff of her daydreams. She was going to get to meet the Doctor (possibly already had, in fact, though despite the brief explanation he'd given her, she wasn't entirely sure just what the strange elfin creature's relationship was to the actual Doctor, other than that they seemed to have exactly the same taste in clothes), and here were the half the characters from Blake's 7, for crying out loud... How much would she have been willing to give to meet them? She certainly had all sorts of questions for Blake, starting with "How did you manage to survive Gauda Prime?" -- there had, after all, been an awful lot of blood -- but somehow she couldn't think of any polite way of asking any of them. So she simply stood there in a sort of shocked silence, munching on her jelly baby, watching the TARDIS column oscillating gently up and down, and wondering if she was going to wake up soon.

She was startled out of this strange mental numbness by the feeling of a hand reaching into her pocket. She looked down, startled, to see a small, tow-headed child solemnly examining her car keys. "Hey! Give those back!"

"Junior!" yelled the child's mother, whom Betty had rather belatedly identified as Kerril, Vila's love interest from the episode whose tape he'd been eyeing back in her trailer. Nice to see that those two had finally gotten together, anyway.

"Vila!" Kerril called in a long-suffering tone of voice. "He's doing it again!"

Vila, who had been busy exchanging semi-friendly insults with Avon, turned his attention to his offspring. "Vila Junior! How many times have I told you?" The child looked abashed and offered Betty the keys back. She slipped them back into her pocket.

"It's not good if you let them feel you doing it," Vila Sr. continued. "Now, watch me." He was suddenly handing Betty back her keys again. She had to pat her empty pocket to confirm that he hadn't actually produced a second set from out of thin air.

The elf-woman who bore a strange (albeit much shorter) resemblence to Romana turned to glare at him. "There'll be none of that from you at the wedding!" she said sternly. "Best behavior, Vila, I mean it! Or we'll let Inquirer turn you into a toad."

Vila gave her a shucks-who-me? look, but before she could respond, her elfin companion interrupted. "Speaking of which, I've believe we've arrived!" he beamed.

  1. Somehow, Avon contrived to be the first one out of the TARDIS again, but at least this time no one managed to trip over him.
