Balwen Mystere was the owner of a gypsy circus travelling carnival freak
show, and as such, was always on the lookout for new talent. Now, as he
examined the wares at a slave auction, he was surprised to see a young
mime cheerfully doing his schtick among the other slaves, who were all
broken and despondent. "Hey Slavemaster." Balwen asked. "What's the story with the mime?" "Oh, that guy? He's a weird one. Some of my boys were on a routine visit to the Southern Caves, when they found him running around in there. The guy creeps me out. Doesn't eat, doesn't drink - I don't think he even sleeps. All he does is stand there in his 'box' or whatever. I'll let you have him for cheap - say, three gold Alacriums?" "Well, one of my mimes died recently, so I guess I'll take him." Balwen said. And so Velus's new life began. --- Velus had mixed feelings about his new life as a circus mime. The food was usually substandard, and the beatings frequent and painful. But he did get to meet a lot of interesting people. There was Arla the Bearded Lady, who was always quite nice to him. There was the Flame Eater, Strephon, who was a jerk, but it was fascinating to see him perform. There was Quarlos, the drunken Magician, whose magic show doubled as a comedy act, and countless others whom Velus got to know well. Together this motley crew travelled all across the lands, putting on shows and getting rave reviews everywhere. Velus enjoyed making people happy with his performances. Mimes, of course, were never too popular in any world or century, so Velus also learned how to juggle and escape from deadly traps in record time, until he was the best mime in the circus' repetoire. All in all Velus was happy, and held no grudge toward Fred for turning him into a mime and leaving him in the caves. But then one day something happened that turned Velus' peaceful world upside down yet again.
