Fred approached the camels, who looked down their noses haughtily at him.
"Have you fallen victim to the dragon's magic?" he asked the first one.
The dragon belched in his face and started chewing its cud. Great, thought
Fred. He turned to go but as he did so a handsome black camel said "Stay,
Lord Fred! I was once a man of honour, and I will help you if I can."
"And this camel?" asked Fred, gesturing at the first camel "Its always
been a camel?" "No, but as a man he was a Duke, and he thinks a mere Lord
to be beneath him". "A Duke? Surely not the missing Roger, Duke of
Farmoor?" "The same" said the black camel sadly. The camel who had been
His Grace the Duke of Farmoor stood up and stalked away haughtily. The
black camel went on "And I am...I was...Lord Ranald, his brother. Let me
go with you, Lord Fred. I will gladly bear you on my back, and perhaps if
I help you slay this dragon the spell that holds me in this shape will
fall away, and I will be a man again". the dragon that had been His Grace
looked over its shoulder and said "Then I too will go with you, Lord
Fred. Ranald wants to be a man while I remain a camel, so that he can
become the Duke or Farmoor!"
"That's a lie!" retorted Ranald. "I only wish to be a man again so that I
can return to my wife, the fair Eleyne. I don't want your wretched Duchy!"
Oh great, thought Fred. A couple of squabbling camels as companions. I
was better off with that adolescent puppy Velus. However it was clear that
the camels were determined to go with him
"Who is this third camel?" asked Fred, gesturing at the last camel, which
was slowly rising to its feet.
"That is Sir Michael, my young cousin" said Ranald. "With three camels,
Lord Fred, you will be able to travel a long way, and carry good armour
and arms."
"Not on MY back" grunted Roger. Ranald and Roger began arguing again.
Michael hung his ugly camel head and sighed wearily.
"That's enough!" said Fred at last "I've decided
