Disappearing Act

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 17486

As they are having breakfast, Prince Cederik and Velus are astonished when Fred and Astra suddenly vanish into thin air.

They have been spirited away by the Book, an evil entity located within a mysterious Red Pyramid which has its own plans for them. After a brief period trapped inside the Red Pyramid with a number of other Freds and Astras (and a few others who had been collected by mistake), the Book transforms them both into enormous, seemingly mindless, magical lumps of protoplasm. [15419] It then sends them out onto the surface of "Nantucket Earth".

The lumps instinctively shamble to terminals of the Slipgate system which the Book has installed, and use them to travel far and wide. At frequent intervals during their wanderings they undergo a fissioning process in which a number of children of one "fantasy" race or another (for example elves, dwarves, gryphons) come into existence.

Their bulk gradually diminishes. Finally reaching the end of their usefulness, they do one last shedding, of satyr children, and should then by rights die. Something that the Book hadn't anticipated occurs, though. Could a friendly Celestrial have, very unofficially, provided a helping hand? At any rate the spirits of Astra and Fred (these things' former body owners) had not departed, but have hung around like ghosts that would not leave! The spirits are finally able to possess the blobs and to force them to change to the nearest to normality that they could get with the "current setting" (i.e. satyrs).

It is a wholly instinctive process, for the satyrs Fred and Astra awaken with no memories at first of who they are, but just vague disturbing glimpses. Though much changed, they are still recognisable as a Fred and an Astra.
