They stood there on the grassy plain for a few moments, talking. Betty
learned that her companion's name was Melissa and that she had no better
idea than Betty did where they were or what they should do next. Betty was
just asking Melissa what the whole "understudy" thing had been about in the
first place, when a man on horseback came riding up toward them. Lacking an
idea of anything better to do -- or a good place to hide -- the two stood
there until he came close enough to see them clearly... At which point he
reigned his horse up sharply, a look of horror on his face, shouted
something about a prophecy and the "Twins of Doom," and promptly took off
for the village at a breakneck gallop.
