Charlie is content with the situation as the extra time that Fred is
staying as Susan is allowing another property of the berries to take
effect. The berries act as a very mild sedative, which has the effect of
reducing the anxiety of someone transformed like the ex-knight. Whereas,
under normal circumstances he would fight tooth and nail to get back, Susan
is becoming well used to a different reality, one of softness and
gentility.
The boy realises that, the longer he can keep his new friend as she is, she will become ever less interested in not being Susan. It is just a matter of time.
