The Never Ending Quest - Episode 17269

It might have been a little bit less awful if the robot Fred had become had been able to just kind of sit back and let his automatic functions take care of all commands put to him, but no—when he received an order, he had to exert effort to follow it. Like a drive it was impossible to fight. And the rest of the time, he—it—could do nothing but stand, and wait.

It was cold, and it was dark, and it was hopeless. FRED (Friendly Reliable Employee Droid) still felt emotion, but they dulled over time—a good thing for all involved, or the robot might have gone insane, which would have equated to "broken," and who wants a broken slave robot?

Thus it was, for many years. After a very long time serving a disembodied voice, FRED may have had a mental break if it weren't so well-constructed. Finally...

  1. a moment of foolishness on the part of its master left FRED an opportunity to escape—but it would probably cease function once it had gone too long without receiving an order. Was it worth it?
  2. FRED's master sold the robot.
  3. the first voice returned and informed FRED that it was about to be reprogrammed.
