The dragon was content. His tampering with the memories of Fred, Thessamar
and Velus
had gone well. Fred and Thessamar had been made to forget that her bonds
had been
enchanted, and that she had ever said: "Perhaps together we can defeat
this Dragon
of the Northern Caves...but with his magic powers he has toyed with me!"
[38] Velus had forgotten
that it was the dragon who had been responsible for turning him into a
dog, [9] and thought
that it had been a wizard called Belboz who was responsible. Thus as far as
they were concerned, the dragon was no more than a very dangerous animal,
and that was the information
they had passed on to their helpers. So if they managed to get as far as
his cave, they would not be
expecting the barrage of spells that he would throw at them, which would
give him an enormous
advantage.
The business with the drum had been his doing, though it suited him for Thessamar to assume that it was most probably Sir John. Now that they had two mages with them, he would have to be more circumspect with further magic, though. He wouldn't want them to be able to trace it to him, and thereby to be put on their guard. He had naturally wondered what had been going on when he had realised that Fred and Thessamar had somehow been snatched out of existence. But then they had reappeared a few minutes later, with allies. For a brief moment he had been afraid that Fred and Thessamar had somehow detected his deception, had had far greater powers than he had thought, and had magically transported themselves to find aid. But then the surveillance spell, impossible to detect unless you knew it was there, that he had planted deep within Thessamar's mind when she was his captive had let him find out the true state of affairs. That spell was invaluable, letting him see and hear everything that Thessamar saw and heard. It was buried so deep that the Book had not detected it and even her Unseelie curse and subsequent restoration had not affected it.
