"What!" Velus exclaimed. "Not only do I get turned into a girl but, to add potential injury to insult, I could get eaten by the dragon into the bargain. Thanks, but no thanks. I want no part of this. Turn me back into a boy at once."

"You aren't exactly in a strong bargaining position," the Wizard of Kamiro pointed out. "If you go back into the caves with Lord Fred and assist him to kill the dragon, then I will turn you back into a boy when you return here afterwards. Of course, I can't compel you to help Lord Fred, but if you refuse then you will stay a girl forever. Unless you'd rather be a dog again? I could arrange that for you if you wish."

  1. Velus decided that in the circumstances he would take the risk of being eaten, and would help Fred.
  2. Velus decided that even being permanently stuck as a girl would be preferable to going back into the dragon's domain.
  3. Velus decided that he didn't want to go back into the caves, and also that he'd rather be a dog than a girl.
