You find yourself standing in front of the home you grew up in. 'That's
odd,' you think. What is even
more odd though is the fact that, except for the large field that lies
behind the house, your home is the
only thing you can see. Everywhere else is... well, there's nothing. Not
a house, not a sidewalk, not even
a blank void. Because at least you can see a blank void. But,
except for your childhood home
and the field which stretches behind it, there isn't anything here at all
for you to see. And, not
surprisingly, this bothers your eyes to no end.
On impulse you go around back. The empty, overgrown field seems bigger to you now. It stretches out endlessly into the horizon, which isn't exactly how you remember it. But, and this is how you remember it, the only thing that breaks up the field's grassy monotony is the scarecrow which is still hanging from its pole just outside your bedroom window. When you were a child the thing almost frightened you, but that momentary glimpse at transcendence you had a few minutes ago has changed all that. You now feel a tender nostalgia for the lonely scarecrow. But you can't remember what its face looks like. From your bedroom you could only see its backside, the thing had always been facing away from you. You never understood the reason for that, until now anyway. So you jog up around it and peer into its face. "Who the hell are you?" the scarecrow blinks, taken aback by the surprising appearance of this unknown man. You jump back. "You talk!" "How very astute," the scarecrow replies, "but would you mind answering the question. I don't like strangers suddenly appearing in my field." "But I'm no stranger!" you smile, "I'm Billy!" The scarecrow cocks its head quizzically. It has no idea who you are. "I'm Billy, the boy who lived here a long time ago." You then twist the pole and turn the scarecrow about so he can see your home. For a long moment there is only silence and then the scarecrow looks down at you and says, "You've been watching me this entire time? Spying on me like some sinister voyeur? Do you know how humiliated and violated I feel right now?" You're not sure how to respond, you never thought of it in that way before. "And to have the gall to build an entire house right behind my back! Who the hell do you think you are!?" "Now just wait a minute," you begin to say, but the scarecrow cuts you off. "It was you, wasn't it!" the scarecrow growls in an accusing voice. "I mean, here I am a scarecrow in a field which just cries out to crows to come and have a party in and I'm just waiting here all at the ready to scare the bejezus out of them. But there ARE - NO - CROWS! WHY!?! Can you tell me that? Why did you do it?! Why did you kill all the crows?!" You look up at the scarecrow and sigh. "It was because you were bad, Mr.Scarecrow. And you had to be punished."
