Thessamar ix'latl murmured, "Why should the scroll have been addressed to
you who knows nothing of these matters? It should have been addressed to
me..." She looked at the knight from Allaria with some discomfort. "I
had heard rumors that John was attempting to raise up the Cardasii. He
thinks that he can control them."
Fred looked at her with a blank face. "What exactly are Cardasii?" The warrior looked at Fred as if he had just told her he didn't know what water was. "You don't know??? Seriously? The Cardasii are the most feared of all animals that hunt within the jungles." "Why?" "Because they carry the resemblance of great apes but have knowledge of demons." "What kind of riddle is that?!?" retorted Fred. Thessamar shifted her feet, this topic was beginning to bother her. "The Cardasii are said to live within the bowls of the earth. When raised, they hunt; that is their sole purpose - the hunt, the kill. They look like southern apes, they run and leap and climb like the simple beasts, too, but they are far from simple. These are terrible monsters that possess magics; they howl incantations, they screech curses. They can crush your skull with their bare hands or burn your soul with a magick'd cry." "Astra, I... my people have never heard of such monsters," said Fred awestruck by the description of these things. "Then the Goddess has blessed you," sighed Astra. "But what does this scroll have to do with the dragon? The Man of Lies, is he this evil John of yours? And what of the woman?" [2095] "You ask too many questions," said Thessamar. "Let us find the Dragon first, let us find it and kill it. I tire of this curse [45] I long for the day I can wear my mail and cloak."
