They check the map that was also in the bag, and find that Walants will be a four or five days ride. That should give them ample safety margin - always providing, of course, that they don't run into serious trouble en route.

Fred gives Astra a leg-up onto the horse, and then manages to clamber up himself, and they set off. It is a pleasant day for riding. Not surprisingly, so close to the exit from the dragon's domain, this is an uninhabited area, but all seems peaceful. They ride until dusk, and then make camp for the night.

  1. In the morning, the horse is gone, though they have heard nothing.
  2. Something wakes Astra in the middle of the night. Until her fox's enhanced nocturnal vision has time to adjust to the darkness, all she can see is two glowing amber eyes looking at her.
