The Road we Walk (part 2)

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 16616

Quietly, he began to have an idea...

Six months or so later in the Brazen Man's personal time, he is smiling with malignant pride. All the pieces are set up. He has gone throughout the multiverse, seeking out the most evil beings there were. He has transformed them into an army of Dark Champions, Eternal Champions who served the Army of Darkness. Such beings are possible, the law that allowed them to exist is on the books. But the Offices do not believe in the idea of the balance between good and evil, so much that even most members of the evil office would have been shocked by the sheer audacity of what the Brazen Man is now planning.

He has developed quite an army now, and is ready to besiege the Champions' headquarters. With any luck, he would soon have the Champions taken care of.

There is one problem. For the first time in years, he is starting to doubt the course he had taken. Through a few carefully chosen allies among the Army of Darkness, he had gained access to the biographies of the Champions, so he could learn their strengths and weaknesses. And he had learned that one of them is a close analog of the Frederigo D'Honaire he had once been--except that it turned out that Thaobath is a separate entity from Fred, and that it had been expelled, so that he is redeemed. He also learned that when he himself had been transported to Terra, Frederigo had died in him and only Thaobath remained.

At first, he had thought little of it. He is glad that there is no more trace of Frederigo D'Honaire in him-- after all, he might somehow break through and prevent the Brazen Man from fulfilling his destiny and ruling all. But then, there had been the dreams. Although the Brazen Man needs no sleep, he nonetheless does, so he can dream; for dreams often contain some clue to Fate. These dreams, however, had been different. They were not about what would be, but about what might have been. In them, he was not the Brazen Man, but once more Lord Frederigo D'Honaire, the noble knight. And he was together with Astra, and they were in love. Not merely sexually involved, but deeply connected on the soul level as well. Whenever he woke up from one of these dreams, he felt regret and guilt. These emotions were not new to him, he was used to ignoring them. But they were stronger than ever now.

What was happening seemed clear. Lord Frederigo had somehow returned to him. But how? When he had been transported here, Frederigo had no longer been a part of him. And what's more, there had never been an honorable knight called Frederigo D'Honaire. He had secretly been evil all along. That was why he had been sent to Hell in the first place. [12527] He had never seen Astra as more than a source of pleasure or an advantageous political match. So why has he been having these dreams?

To find the answer, he needs to be alone. So he is here. This world was once the home of an Earthlike planet called the World of Two Moons, but it was destroyed by the actions of one of its inhabitants, encouraged by the Brazen Man's own former master. Its timeline was destabilized, sent back to the Big Bang. It has now returned to a more or less stable state, but there was still too much local instability. Nothing lives in this universe, except for a group of Guardians who acted as special agents of the Rules and Agents. They are on Earth, light years from here. He is on a world in the constellation of Kasterborous, a world once known as Gallifrey, once inhabited by men who set themselves up as guardians of Time. Now, the temporal instability is so great that almost nothing can exist here, and even the Guardians cannot come here. A perfect hiding place. Here he would dream, and hope the dreams contained some answers.

  1. That is when he hears a strange noise.
