...the third ball of grease and fire flew over the wall and down into the
courtyard. The impact causing it to explode, sending fragments of flame
outward like a shooting star. Frames, doors, benches, anything made of
wood caught fire. The fourth ball smacked into the outside wall, made of
stone. Though rock cannot burn, it deflected the searing rat fat upwards
towards the soldiers thereon. The screaming, the yelling and shouting was
horrendous. On the walls, orders and commands, and cries of dying men.
Within the walls shouts and orders, and the screams of terrified people.
Far from that terrible scene and many others like it, King Terrance Wise sat in a chair reading over many field reports. He had been king for only two years, three months. His coronation came after the mysterious death of King Gerald Pick. But most people still remembered King Emry Exultaine as their protector. "Bah! Madness and damnations!" screamed the King. "What is it, m'Lord?" asked the worried servant. "I ask you a question, dear Pearson. How can a horse fight a unicorn?" "M'Liege?" The servant looked oddly at the King. "Well... it could kick, it could." "But the unicorn can run circles about that horse." "It can.... bite." "IF the horse can even make contact, yes... but the unicorn can bite back." "Well, it can charge that 'corn and bully up against its gut." "Quite right, Pearson, but the horse can only push and shove, the unicorn can charge as well... but when it does so, its damnable horn can gut our horse in twain!" "Aah," said the servant. "Cannot we just go out and round up more horses?" King Terrance looked at Pearson and laughed, a slow, sad laugh. "If only it were that easy, my friend. But we are the horse, and our enemy seems to be the unicorn."
