The dictionary defines "ghastly" as "Inspiring shock, revulsion, or horror
by or as if by suggesting death; terrifying." Such ghastly sights awaited
Diana and Fred at the next village that they could scarce be described in
words even if they had complied a thesaurus: the fires; the bloated
bodies; the penterating stench of death. It was all too much to behold.
The few survivors had set about packing what belongings they could find and headed out in clumps toward the main road. Diana was beside herself with grief. "Why did the orcs do this?" "I don't know" was all Fred could think to reply. Indeed he did know. Before he left to slay the dragon a wise man of the castle had shown him a prophecy in which the creatures of the night came surging to power: dragons, orcs, trolls and their minions were to sweep over the land, unless their forces were stopped. The wise man had urged Fred to find the mighty sword Orcslayer rumored to be in the forest before plunging into the caves, but Fred had refused. There were no orcs, not for miles and miles. And he could handle a dragon or three. But now he sat upon a stump looking over a wreck of a town, full of suffering and sorrow. He mused on his options. He could find Orcslayer, which might take weeks. He could find the source of this pack of the night. Or he could take Diana and the others back to the safety of the castle. They would need him if attacked again.
