The Ghosts of the Cavern

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 16516

Fred and Qundarian traveled through the caverns in the days to follow, seeking out these entites of which the old man spoke, while Fred struggled on a daily basis to maintain his sanity. His powers were growing in his new state of life beyond death, but re-living his demise each night was always something he dreaded more than anything. He was helpless to stop it, though; he found himself acting out the final moments of his life each and every night as though it were some twisted play, written at his pitiful expense. "We all deal with such torments," said Khakaa, one of the apparitions that haunted the caverns, whom Fred had been able to communicate with once his powers had grown considerably. "The old man told me as much," Fred replied with a sidelong glance at Qundarian, who stood nearby. Fred had told Khakaa of his plight, to which the ghostlike being was not unsympathetic, but he had problems of his own. Khakaa had been murdered by his own comrades in his infantry division under the Dragon's Command. He had been stabbed in his sleep repeatedly by his fellow men, and he woke to this terror unable to defend himself against the repeated attacks of the men as they more or less butchered him. Blood ran from his body in torrents, and he tried to scream out for help, but only blood ran from his mouth. Even if he had been able to call for help...there was no one for miles around, save for the Dragon's own minions, the extent of whose treachery he now well knew. "I know what it is to be betrayed," Khakaa told Fred, "just as you do. I was betrayed by my fellow soldiers as they murdered me in my bunk; you were betrayed by your so-called 'friend' as she decided to finish you off in your paralyzed state." Khakaa paused. "We have a few hours until midnight, Fred," Khakaa said. "Do you ever wonder what became of this woman Astra after your death?" Fred just sighed. "Well, your reason for remaining here in this state is obvious connected in some way to your death, and to her," Khakaa reasoned. "Perhaps we should go and find her, to start." Fred looked at Qundarian, who shrugged. Well...it was a start. Fred didn't know what else to do. Qundarian remained behind, as he would be seen by the mortal eyes, but Fred and Khakaa were free to seek out Astra without being detected. When they finally came upon Astra...

  1. ...the Dragon had her in chains, scheduled to be executed the next day. She had betrayed Fred, and the Dragon had apparently betrayed her in kind!
  2. ...she was laughing and drinking with her friends, other minions of the Dragon, and having the time of her life. She was making jokes and disrespectful remarks about Fred's final moments even, which apalled Fred to the extreme.
  3. ...she was back in her homeland, pretending that none of it had happened, and no one suspected that she was a servant of the Dragon.
