All Aqualarian girls were brought up to be tough and resilient, and that
applied
just as much - if not more so - to the daughters of the queen. Even so,
Carola's
situation was a daunting one for a fourteen yesr old. Indeed it would have
been a daunting
one for an adult, no matter how heroic.
How could Belinda have turned traitor to her own sisters? she wondered. Belinda had seemed to become increasingly difficult over the last couple of years, so that shared imprisonment on the island with her had been even more unpleasant than it need have been, but she found it hard to believe that she could have stooped quite so low. But she didn't have time now to reflect on that. She did not know what was going to happen to Astra, but she knew that the dragon-mage was likely to treat harshly anyone he perceived as having betrayed him. She felt that she must try to rescue her, but how could she possibly do that? She was one girl against the whole of the dragon's forces. She did not even have a weapon, for Belinda had presumably not thought she needed one when she came to see the prisoners.
