Fred had feared that he would be forced to watch whatever was done to Astra. Now it seemed that that would not be the case. However, in a way it was perhaps worse not knowing what was happening to her, though he was likely to find out soon enough. And once his paralysis had worn off he knew it would be his turn to suffer whatever magic or torture the dragon had planned for him.

When Belinda entered the cell, he wondered whether she intended to torment him some more, but she turned away from him and went towards her sister. Belinda bent down and roughly slapped Carola on the cheek. "Wake up, sleepy-head!" she said mockingly.

  1. But Carola still had too much of the drug in her system, and did not respond.
  2. Carola stirred, and then sat up and opened her eyes. "Where am I? Belinda? What's going on?" she asked.
  3. Suddenly Carola's legs straightened, and she kicked Belinda hard in the stomach. She had awoken five minutes before, had heard Belinda's exchange with Astra and had pretended to still be asleep.
