"Until very recently," Anastasia said plainly, "I believed myself to be
another person. "I thought I was Stacy, a former graduate student of Dr. Johannes Myer. I found, though, that I had disturbing gaps in my memory, and often total amnesia. "I came to suspect that it was the professor that was causing these episodes, but it was not until the first night of the full moon that I realized how right I was. "The curse has many benefits. The beast is our true self, and when it asserts itself upon your form, it is hard to be anyone but who you really are. Perhaps it is this that saved me from their brainwashing and mesmerism. "I have actually been alive several centuries. I even at one point, for all intends and purposes, died. I laid upon a stone bier in a tomb until the Society awakened me. When I proved too obstinate for them, they robbed me of my identity, praying I remained pliant long enough for them to witness my change. I do not wish to know what they had planned should they have been able to keep me." At this, Anastasia seemed to break down, her eyes tearing up. She collapsed into Irene's arms, as she was the nearest, and began to sob. "How horrible," Rose said, feeling a strange anger rise in her, "I can't believe I let them make me a part of this!" Rose was seething, and the others present watched her warily as they recognized the beginnings of the change. "Calm down," Erin said, "I know the feelings are intense, but that's the wolf talking, not you. Take a few deep breaths before we regret lending you clothes." Rose shook her head, trying to get her bearings, and looked down at her hands, seeing the downy hairs that had sprouted, and her lengthening nails. Clearing her head, she returned to normal, but perhaps for the first time realized the danger of what she was now. "So," Rose said, "what do we do now?" "Tonight," Erin said, "we keep vigil over you until the stroke of midnight. The Society knows your True Name, and we must protect you from malign magic until the witching hour, when we will induce the change in us all and grant you new one in the surest way, as a pack."
