In the few days since Andrea had left home as a
naive young girl in search
of adventure, she had already had enough of an education in life's dangers
to appreciate that she would be at great risk if she
tried to go off on her own. This was wild country,
and the journey to Caemlyn would take not just days but weeks.
So she reluctantly went with Belboz in his quest for the legendary Simon D'Chrétien. It was mid-afternoon when they left the hut (it had been noon when they were ambushed), so they would have another three or four hours of daylight. "Will we have to spend the night in the open?" Andrea asked, after they had walked in silence for a while. "Probably, unless we can find another shack. Will that bother you?" "Not really. I spent two nights in the open on the journey to Mt Cicatrice. How long do you expect this journey to take?" "If Simon is still near where he was last heard of, then about three or four days." "Can't you use magic to see where he is now?" "I will do that only as a last resort. First, it would be intrusive - a bit like spying on him. Whilst I am prepared to spy on my enemies if need be, I don't like to do so on someone who was once a friend. Second, because if he does not want to be found, then there is no guarantee that a spell would succeed, for he is adept at cloaking himself against magic. Thirdly, I don't have all the magical items at my disposal that I would have were I at home. All in all, it would be very difficult." "You said he was once a friend of yours. Does that mean that he isn't now?" "I hardly know. We parted amicably enough, but then he vanished into the wild, and I haven't seen him since. That was twenty years or so ago. The last news I had of his whereabouts was three or four years back."
