Belinda went on: "You see, a few hours before you and Astra turned up, the
guard took me from the cell, leaving Carola behind. That was very unusual.
He led
me to a room where a messenger from the dragon was waiting. The messenger
told
me that Astra and a knight would probably shortly put in an appearance.
They would
be allowed to 'rescue' me and my sister. If I would kill the knight for
him, then I
would be given my freedom. I was also to drug my sisters - the messenger
gave me a
supply of the drug - so that the dragon's men could recapture them. Carola
would
be returned to her cell; Astra, having betrayed the dragon in teaming up
with you
for the rescue attempt, would face something more unpleasant. Well, Carola
had
been getting on my nerves, and I never liked Astra much, so I agreed. Then
I was returned to the
cell, and made up some reason for my temporary absence that satisfied
Carola."
Fred thought that Belinda was unwise to believe that the dragon would really let her go free.
