Betty always found a nice walk to be the most effective way of clearing her
head and ordering her thoughts, and if ever her mind could use a little
clarity and order, today was the day. As she strolled across the campus,
she pondered what she knew of Dr. Harmonn's theories. She'd always thought
they were interesting, the sort of thing that might make for some good
science fiction, but, truth to tell, she mainly regarded them as a rather,
well, crackpot. Of course, that In Search of... show regularly
featured stuff that she regarded as pretty crackpot, so that didn't seem
particularly odd. Wait a minute. A vague thought that had been lurking quietly at the back of her head began waving its arms and screaming for attention. Reluctantly, she confronted it. In Search of... hadn't been on the air for years. OK, well, that didn't mean diddley-squat, did it? There were all kinds of perfectly reasonable explanations. Maybe they were bringing it back. Maybe it was some kind of TV special. Perfectly ordinary. Except... Except a lot of other questions were suddenly flooding through her brain. Like, why hadn't she heard about this? When Jodie Foster came out to film Contact it was big news at the Observatory for months. And how had Leonard Nimoy, of all people, managed to walk across Tech campus (a place Betty sometimes thought of affectionately as "Nerd Central") without being mobbed by a horde of Trekkies? And... And, you know, Mr. Nimoy had looked awfully young. Much younger than he'd seemed in the last few Trek movies. He'd seemed a little...off, as well. Almost like he was trying to hard too act casual. And then there were those Hollywood types. Hadn't they seemed a little too Hollywood? Now that she thought about it, one of the guys with the clipboards had looked eerily like a young James Doohan. And why was Nimoy wearing a headband that covered the tops of his ears? No, these thoughts could not be going in the direction she thought they were going. Supressing another hysterical giggle, Betty tried to shove the half-formed but utterly insane idea from her mind. Must think about something else...
