Lord Sithe gave another crack of the whip. They had bound the Black Gryphon, but had not yet broken it. It frustrated, but he persevered, if only for the fact that if he did not it would be another sleepless night due to the beast's cries. It needed to be done for other reasons as well, and before the Redeemer returned. If they tamed it and did the other things that had been asked of them, their twisted and wretched forms would be made clean, as in the paintings of his grandsire, and grandsire's grandsire. Then he would stand over his people, not as Lord... ...but Thane They say that I am evil. Perhaps I am, for I wear the mask of the demon, and nurture the nightmares of sleeping children. But evil is but a word, and my purpose is far greater. I am opposition. It is a cold life, away from warmth and light, dwelling amongst the memories of things broken and lost. Yet the other three would be nothing without me. It is opposition that defines, and opposition alone that drives, and makes victory mean something. That is the secret I keep from them, for it is I who have loosed the Branded. In time, they will thank me for it. I have saved them from stale acquiesence. I am the greatest of the four that petitioned the Norns, long ago. Demifox Synizn didn't notice the swirling dust as it blew into his abode. Thus, he was quite surprised to find the rough figure of a man facing him when he turned around. It was a face he recognized. "Zerm!" "No, not anymore." "What are you doing here? You're dead!" "Yes, I am dead. As for why I'm here, I could tell you, but you wouldn't understand. All I can tell you is it's nothing personal." With that, the Dust Mage made a twisting motion with its crude hand and Synizn's blood seemed to freeze. Pain like razorblades raced along his veins, bunching in the center of his chest. His last sight before death was that of a chaotically sparkling shard bursting forth from his ribcage. "Remember, Synizin, nothing personal. Just business..."
