While Fortune Smiles

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 15347

Mahmoud the Giant stepped into the ruins of Smuggler's Cove and made his way to the lone figure sitting atop the blackened remains of a stone tower. The Giant's heart was filled with bitter rage and contempt. "JARLATH!" his voice boomed out. The blind man turned toward the voice, his face blank and serene. "WHERE IS MY SCEPTRE?!" the Giant shouted, the pain in his voice clear. All Mahmoud wanted was his precious sceptre. He ignored everything else, the carnage, the twisted dead, the burning embers of a town no more.

"I am pleased that you came," Jarlath said as the Giant approached. "There is someone here who has been waiting for you."

And then a dark shadow engulfed the furious Giant and Mahmoud looked up into the burning eyes of Mahaziel. Mahmoud stopped, nearly stumbling. His eyes grew wide with awe and understanding. And relief. "And so it ends," Mahmoud whispered and Mahaziel held out his hand to him.

Jarlath nodded as the shadow disappeared. "For you. It ends for you."

In the Duchy of Anfang four adventurers continued northward, following the pull of the unfinished medallion. Although they had considered traveling toward the west, the insistent tug of the medallion bade them follow a more easterly route. A route which might eventually lead them into the lands of Hespan. This bothered them all for Hespan was enemy territory for Allarian and Aquilarian alike. But that was something they would have to deal with later.

In the meantime they were trying to move through lawless lands held under the control of the Court of Fools without getting their heads cut off. If there was one thing they could be sure of about the Court of Fools, it was that royal aristocrats, of any stripe, were not welcome there. So far they had been fortunate enough not to have seen any hint that they had been detected but they knew their luck could not last forever. Every village they passed through increased the risk that hostile forces would come against them.

And indeed, though they knew it not, the Court of Fools did know they were somewhere about and was even at that moment searching for them. And let us not forget to mention that other thing which was trailing not too far behind - the avenger sent by the Fey Queen, the servant of the Queen's wrath, the thing made of wood and hate.
