"I don't know. Would you do a thing like that?" Stacy asked, trying to
sound just as deadpan
as Smith.
"Of course not," Smith said smoothly. "But I understand that the police
are not making as good
a job of protecting you and your friend as they might. Now we in the DoD
would
be more than happy to take over the protection of the two of you. You
could not
possibly be safer than with us. Of course, in return we'd expect you to
be... co-operative, shall we say."
"You realise I no longer have a copy of my paper?" said Stacy, hoping to discourage him. "That will be no problem. We have a copy here. Never mind how we got it. But there are one or two parts of it that we are struggling to understand. Oh, we'll get there eventually, whether you help us or not, but your assistance would speed things up. One other carrot for you. Some of our people are doing some very promising research into memory restoration. They might well be able to help you." Stacy wondered how much he had told her was true.
