As Frederigo moved towards her, sword in hand, a rapid succession of
expressions passed
across Exotica's face. First: surprise, since she had not realised that
her spell
would not work on Frederigo. Second: fear, as she waited for his sword to
come down.
And finally: scorn, when the anticipated fatal blow did not come and she
realised why. "You can't do it, can you?"
she taunted him. "Your code of honour won't let you harm someone who is
unarmed and
defenceless, and especially not a woman, no matter how evil she might be."
This was so obviously true, that Frederigo did not bother to reply. Meanwhile Exotica was thinking of how this unexpected turn of events might be made to work to her advantage. If her own magic would not work on Frederigo, then perhaps the dragon's much more powerful magic would not work on him either, assuming that they were still in her own native reality rather than in Frederigo's. If instead they were in Frederigo's native reality, by the same logic that reality's dragon's magic might not work on Exotica, in which case she would be free to leave the caverns. She decided it would be prudent to assume the former case for the moment, though. In that event, Frederigo would have an excellent chance of killing this reality's dragon, since magic was a major part of what made it so formidable. Once dead, the dragon's spells would lapse, and she would be able to escape the caverns. (For that part of what she had told Fred, that the dragon's magic prevented his "guests" from leaving, was true.)
