Who is Who, What is What.... (Part 2)

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 15199

The Empress then moved on to tell about the others present.....

"Now as for the others present," Walker continues, "We have several notable groups that I'd be rather remiss in not talking about. Certain groups make up this new Federation what it is today. We shan't go too deep into each group, since our magical friends are looking rather tired right now."

"Still and all I would rather like to learn of them," Ama'lis says softly, sitting on Astra's shoulder. "Even if it's just the 'thumbnail' sketch as it were. Any terms or analogies we don't understand.....we'll ask for 'backfill' later, as they say."

The "Old" Federation of Planets is one faction. That are a group made of hundreds of worlds who's government is parliamentary democracy in nature. If one should feel the need for a contemporary 20th century Earth equivalent one could perhaps say they are similar to the West (like England, United States, etc). Their economy had developed beyond the need for physical acquisition.....

"But I'll be b*****ed if I understand how their economy works," Walker mutters before continuing.

"It's rather logical and eloquent," Spock of the Enterprise NCC-1701 says from the side.

"Oh, care to try to explain it?" McCoy (also from the Enterprise NCC 1701) snaps quietly, adding when he sees Spock taking a breath to begin, "In twenty five words or less?"

"I....cannot." the Vulcan science officer blinks.

See, back in the 23rd century, from were old Enterprise crew was from, the Federation economy was more advanced than it's 20th century, Earth equivalent in it not using physical money but credits instead. Now?

......

The Klingon Empire is the next faction. As the name suggests, they are an empire....complete with Emperor. They've been compare to the Soviet Union of old Earth, but frankly that's only a rough analogy AND their economy isn't communistic in nature by a long shot. More like the precursor to capitalism, perhaps, but not communistic. They were also expansionistic in nature in Kirks time (and also in Picard's time). However, due to political necessity the Empire formed an Alliance with the Federation when they were nearing collapse similar in nature to Russian under Gorbachev. Unlike Russia in many Earth's history where the Soviet Union collapsed anyway if one wishes to continue with analogies, the Klingon Empire hung on (with help from the Federation) and the two enjoyed a prosperous (if somewhat contentious) relationship. They also were and are made of hundreds of worlds.

"What? The Soviet Union collapsed?" the New Yorkers blink at the last.

"Blame Reagan," Astra says softly, "Basically, the Russians, as I understand it, caused them to go broke in trying to keep up with the United States, militarily speaking."

"Shit." Eddie says softly.

Frankly, he'd considered Reagan a fool and his policies a joke......

Maybe he was in his universe. But apparently it wasn't so in all universes.

"Let's hear it for the Gipper," Jake mutters softly, wondering when America went crazy enough to elect a Hollywood actor to the Presidency. He could see him perhaps being elected, say, Governor to California (that state was a bit.....weird enough anyway for that), but....

Susannah also has similar reservations about Reagan, but felt that the guy wasn't even fit for politics.....

Oh, there had been that newspaper article mentioning him being President on that one world were Captain Trips had run rampant.....but surely Reagan getting elected President on so many Earths was....unthinkable. Against the odds!

Wasn't it?

The Romulan Star Empire is another part of the picture. Yes, they were also something of a star based empire with an analogy of....say.....Communist China of the late 20th century. It too is also expansionistic in nature. However, it was also isolationistic in nature and did NOT join with the Federation in alliance....until much later during a little war with a group called the Dominion forced them to join up. More on that later.

  1. "Then we have the Dominion....." Empress Diana Walker pauses, looking over at Odo and his group.
