Fear of the Gods

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 15164

"She will awaken when I choose," was all the reply that Fred got from Ringroot. "Right now we have more important issues to discuss. As you've said, you only have five more days until your transformation becomes permanent. Well I wish to assure you, I and my people have every reason to help you regain your human form. We have no desire to see you remain as you are."

"Are you still afraid that Astra and I can infect your people with whatever curse Minestus has infected us with?" Fred asked.

"Of course I am," Ringroot answered, lightly rubbing his arm where Astra had bit him. "Luckily I am the only demifox who has been put in danger. And when the moon rises full again, some thirty days from now, we will see just how much danger."

"I," Fred looked at Ringroot compassionately, "I am sorry for you, for what Astra did to you."

"So am I," Ringroot replied darkly. "But fear of moon madness is not the only reason we hope to cure you. Indeed, it is not even the most important. What is important is that, whether you are a demifox or a neo-fox, whether you can spread your condition to other humans like a werefox or, spirits forbid, if you can even spread your condition to the demifolke, it is clear that Minestus overstepped his bounds as a magus when he created you and the risk of divine retribution now lies over all our heads."

Fred had heard Ringroot speak of the wrath of the gods before. He didn't really understand what Ringroot was talking about. Fred's gods could probably care less about what had happened to him. Why then did Ringroot's gods seem so bothered about the situation?

"You don't seem overly concerned with Ringroot's prognosis," Arkas said, smiling at Fred. Fred shrugged at the mage saying, "I've never been one much for theology. And I can't say my gods have been interested in it either." Arkas chuckled, "Well my good man, there are more gods in this world than just those you worship. And though I've personally never paid them much heed, I'm not so sure that Ringroot is wrong about this or them."

"But why should we be punished for what a dragon has done?" Fred asked testily.

"Minestus committed a grave sin," Ringroot answered him. "He opened a door that allowed him to usurp the powers of Creation. Unless we all want to suffer the wrath of the gods we had better find a way to close that door."

"Well the answer must lie in the Crystallic," Fred replied. "Why don't we find Synizn and make him help us in this. Surely he cannot desire the end of the world, or whatever it is that your gods have planned for us."

Ringroot scowled, "Synizn is a dragon-slave and a werebear. He is an evil thing which cannot be trusted. No, if we are to avert disaster and return your humanity to you we must do it by ourselves. And Arkas shall lead us in our cause."

  1. "Well then Arkas," Fred smiled, glancing at the six guards that still encircled him with drawn spears, "lead the way."
