They tried the door but, as they had feared, it still seemed to be locked. But then they heard the sound of the bolt being drawn back. The door opened to reveal:

  1. The gnome. "This is a pleasant surprise. We feared that you were dead," Fred said.
  2. Whoever or whatever had attacked the gnome.
