As expected, the ladder led to an Elvish stronghold. The area they ended up in was twenty feet long and tall, had a curved roof and held five archer slots on each side. All were six inches wide, two feet high and rimmed with decorative brass. Some of it seemed to be sculpted but Fred wisely decided a close look was not a good idea. The floor was smooth, polished wood, except for the bright orange ball, about a foot in diameter, near the other end of the hall. "Greetings." it said. With each syllable, it darkened. "Welcome to the Grand Entrance Hall Of The Elvish King. You have been assigned the number..." there was a pause then, "forty two" said a different voice entirely. "Please wait," continued the original voice, "And you will be consulted in the order that you appeared. Hostile action will be met with a rain of poisoned arrows. To listen to this message in Fancois, raise three fingers. To listen to this message in Elvish, raise two fingers. To listen to this message in Orcish, grunt loudly and belch." Fred and Astra looked at each other. They sat on the floor and waited. The archer slots remained dark but the two were sure that someone was behind each one.
