Fred was trapped and he knew it. First his curiosity (and – he had to
admit to himself – a little bit of greed) caused him to seek after a chest
rather than the Dragon, then once he had reached that temptation he had
been sucked down some kind of current. He awoke on a sandy stretch of
land somewhere else. But things only got worse. ~~that bottle and the
message within [31], how could I know that it was from my very self!?!
~~ The note led him from the murky waters, northward to a small cave
that had been despoiled of its contents. He slept there, for a while, but
then was woken in the dark of night. ~~ to awaken staring at oneself
as if in a mirror! [85] Now that was unsettling, yet I still
could not bring myself to believe the mad words of the one who claimed to
be me [125]. I still find the thought of seeing myself from the future
and of fighting the Grand Wyrm Minestus a frightening prospect [1355] but
I must go on! If only I had listened to my future self's advice, [1360]
but I did not and now I am here.~~ Fred looked up at the redhead's
face and took her hand. "I shall stay a while, Dinoon," said Fred to the
gruesome creature. "But the Dragon shall die."
The creature's red eyes seemed to flare, its scythe-like head tendrils lashed this way and that. It's tongue zipped out of its puckered mouth, snaring yet another horsefly that had squirmed its way from out of its fleshy cheek. "Considering that we're in the Empire of Death I do not doubt your words," it said. "Yet if you think you're gonna be the guy who does in...which dragon was it again...Menifee?" "Minestus!" "Yeah, him. If you think you're gonna stick a blade up his arse, think again. You're mine right now, and I haven't had a pet in a long time." With that the vile creature rang a bell and the red-headed Renni led him gently away to an apartment complex that was one mile and two stories below the Customer Lobby of the great and mighty Empire of Death.
