Fatima is taken in by a kindly old crone who introduces herself, fortunately in Fatima's language, as Idra. The poor former harem girl does a lot of crying, and Idra listens to her woeful tale, uttered through fat tears and in less-than-intelligent terms. When she finishes, Idra offers her dinner, which the pitiful girl accepts immediately. She cries into her food and falls asleep shortly before finishing. Pleased that her potion has been successful, Idra approaches the poor wench and covers her with a blanket. "You poor pathetic thing," she murmured. "What has been done to you?" When Fatima comes to, her mind feels extremely fuzzy, and somehow... sore? As if it has recently gone through a lot of prodding and reshaping. After several seconds she realizes she is on a cot in the home of that kind woman who took her in. After a few more, memories begin to leak through the holes in her mind, and she examines them with mounting horror. Idra appears shortly. "Ah, you're awake," she says. "I'm sorry to spring this on you in such a way, but there is no easy way to say it. I sensed that your mind had been tampered with, using the rather unusual method of distraction. Memories of a completely separate past life were there, but they were withering away from disuse. They were not covered or suppressed, but your new manufactured memories, mannerisms, and personality were so overpowering that you never cared to remember your true self.
