The Never Ending Quest - Episode 13424

Belboz reeled back, and slowly wiped at the small amount of blood which now welled from his cheek. Fred the teenage girl stood there watching, fists clenched at her sides in righteous fury.

"Well," said the wizard after a moment. "Thankfully you have given me inspiration for just what you will spend the rest of your new life doing."

Just like that, Fred's surroundings melted around her, and she was standing in a cottage filled with herbs and cots. She swayed in place, disoriented from the teleport, and said nothing as Belboz announced, "This is the cottage of a healer named Gloriana. You shall spend the next three years learning, under her instruction, how to treat wounds and illnesses and take care of the sick. When you turn eighteen, you will go off to be a nurse in the war. But don't worry; I'll make sure you live to become a wife and mother." He smiled graciously.

Fred was appalled and infuriated. How dare this wizard strip her of her manhood, and then have the gall to place her in a position so unlike the one she had previously enjoyed?

But before she could rake her fingernails across his face another time, or demand that he restore her knighthood, he said, "Oh, here comes Gloriana now," and vanished into thin air.

The woman who entered the cottage was stout, with shaggy hair and her mouth set in a firm line. She didn't look like a lot of fun, and this impression was reinforced when she barked, "I know that your name is Hannah, but I will address you as 'girl.' You will address me always as 'ma'am,' and never stray from what I say."

"Hannah," despite multiple instances of saying to herself, I should just walk out that door, never could find it in herself to do so. Over a short period of time, the urge left her completely. Reminiscing about the good old days of questing and fighting monsters became rarer and rarer. Often she found herself singing lullabies to patients, and holding small children close to her. Mere weeks into her girlhood, it even ceased to bother her.

  1. Six months into her apprenticeship, she made a serious mistake while treating a simple cold, absolutely enraging Gloriana.
  2. One year into her apprenticeship, she was out gathering herbs for Gloriana when a colony of mischievous fairies targeted her.
  3. A year and a half into her apprenticeship, she caught a grave disease from one of her patients, and became incapacitated by it.
  4. Two years into her apprenticeship, she began to feel things she had never felt before about a squire roughly her age whose broken leg she had been treating.
  5. Two and a half years into her apprenticeship, Belboz showed up to test her by being the most difficult patient who ever lived.
  6. She made it through her entire three-year apprenticeship successfully and without any significant events or mishaps, and traveled to the battlefield to treat wounded soldiers as planned.
