When the car was safely out of sight, Helen let out a sigh. "Nicely
acted," she said.
"Er, it was an act, wasn't it?" Stacy smiled. "Yes, it was. You
didn't put
on a bad performance yourself. So now it's just the two of us, I guess,
judging
by what you said earlier. [11701] And whatever
information was on the disk is lost to us, so it all seems rather
hopeless."
To Stacy's surprise, the normally impassive Helen grinned. "That's not altogether so," she said. "Almost the first thing I did with your disk was to make a backup, since it was so precious. You and Paul were probably too busy talking for you to notice that I did so. For safe keeping I immediately put the backup into my pocket, so it didn't get put into the bag with all the other stuff." [11445] She dug into the pocket of her jeans and triumphantly fished it out. "I can't believe that they were so careless as not to search us," she said. "They must have just assumed that everything of importance was in the bag. So that makes two strokes of luck we've had.
