"Why can't Mahmoud commit suicide? Why do we have to kill him?"
Andrea
asked Jarlath once they were
safely out of earshot. "Suicide is a sin. As Mahmoud sees it, killing
himself would mean
that he wouldn't go to heaven." "Isn't murder a worse sin than suicide?
So what about our prospects of heaven?" "I don't suppose that
concerns him overmuch. We're not of his people. He probably doesn't
believe that
we have souls to be damned or that we could ever go to heaven even were we
free of sin."
Andrea digested that as they walked away from Mahmoud's dwelling. She didn't believe in an afterlife, and even if she was wrong about that she doubted that heaven would admit wolfwomen. She was naked, having turned up her nose at the rags that Jarlath had offered her, as he had known she would. Not only had they become increasingly filthy and tattered, but the very idea that she should wear clothes no longer seemed appropriate to her. Clothes were alien to what she was becoming - had become. Also one beneficial effect of her change was that she no longer felt the cold. "So how are we going to kill Joab and Ishmael?" she wanted to know. "You can't use magic, as you said you couldn't afford another pulse like the one you used to save me from Ishmael. [11025] And I know now that I'd have no chance against them, even should I adopt my full wolfwoman form."
