Fred thought quickly. He was on a mission to kill the dragon, so would it
be right
to flee from it? On the other hand, shouldn't his priority now be to get
the
princess to safety (even though, judging by her riding of the hellhound,
she was
well capable of looking after herself)? Besides, when he had taken on the
quest,
nothing had been said of the dragon being also a wizard and a shape-
shifter.
"What do you know of this woman?" he asked the princess. "In Aqualaria there are legends of a fearful old witch called Jexebelle who lives in the caves." "And is she said to be even worse than the dragon?" "Well, no." "In that case we will follow her." Astra muttered darkly to herself, but she went down the tunnel with Fred. Jexebelle could walk only slowly, with her bad leg, so she was still in sight. As they walked after Jexebelle, the two of them exchanged identities. Fred discovered that his companion was indeed a princess, as he had assumed, and was called Astra. After they had gone perhaps a quarter of a mile, they emerged into a cavern. The witch turned to face them and said:
